About

Course Description

This presentation will introduce the Acute Stress Syndrome Stabilization (ASSYST) treatment procedures in the context of fieldwork with refugees and asylum seekers on three continents: Africa, Latin America, and Europe. The presentation will briefly explain the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) theoretical model and the theoretical foundation of the ASSYST treatment intervention procedures. Different symptoms and real-life experiences of the refugee and asylum-seeking population will be discussed. The ASSYST treatment interventions and their objectives, in their group and individual format, will be introduced, and how the fieldwork team members at EMDR Mexico apply the ASSYST treatment intervention procedures within a symptom-based trajectory stepped care approach with refugees and asylum-seekers. The Humanitarian Emergency ASSYST Response Training, a pro-bono humanitarian training program created, developed, and delivered by EMDR Mexico, will be described. Research on the ASSYST treatment interventions will be presented. Conclusions will highlight free resources and the next steps for those who are interested in training in these protocols.
